Week #2 Metal Work by Robin Sruoginis
8.5 X 8.5 Journal page
I could have sworn I knew where my metal stash was, but no, so I improvised with a soda can for my metal. Took it outside in the cold and torched it. Amazing the effect of heat on the paint. Both sides being fabulous I had to make a choice, and seeing flowers in the warp of the metal on the inside, I went with that. I painted with metal paint by Ranger. Then on to sewing, which I had to go very slow on the machine or it shredded the thread, The hand sewing was easier then I thought. I felted a piece of silk to vintage drapery fabric for the page of the journal. Did collage using paper, silk scraps and more metal in the swirly thing which is hammered wire (learned from IV Anderson) and an antique metal earring.
Barbara McT - Week 2 - I'm Open to Anything!
The Week 2 Technique using metal was challenging! Once I thought about it my mind went into overdrive! The title of this work is "I'm Open to Anything!" Basically meaning I am open to trying any and all new techniques! Lessons learned - I knew nothing about metal so should have googled metal to learn about gauge size before going to the craft shop! Metal is unforgiving - once you make a hole it is there forever! It actually was fun and I will certainly use pieces in other works that I create.
The metal I used is a 36 gauge piece and I found it to be too think for embossing. It went through the sewing machine flawlessly though. I used metallic thread on the quilted portion of this work in keeping with the theme.

Touch of Copper by Denise
I had a difficult time with the metal exercise. This background is again a piece that I hand dyed. I think the metal "pops" on the subtle colors, but it was hard to attach the metal hexagon by machine. I repeated the star design in the quilting above the hexagon. The other metal pieces were woven through the fabric and are not permanently attached. Denise Pitonyak
Rachael Goldman Week 2
I struggled with using metal work this week. I did manage to make a few things that I liked. I could not, for the life of me, use them in a piece. It was like running into the same wall over and over again. I think I have some unfinished business with thread painting and doodling. So… This is Freaky Peekie, my cat Maspeek. She lives in our bedroom and only comes out for us at night. She is thread painted based on a photograph I took of her when she was resting her head on my iPad, lit up in a sad and ghostly way. She is 9 X 9.

Ulla Westermann - Week 2 - The Shield
The two metal pieces on either side were wrinkled and twisted. The metal piece in the middle was tooled. For the background I used two layers of fabric. I quilted lines 1/4 inch apart and then cut the top layer so you can see the lighter fabric underneath. The light gray binding matches the color of the aluminum. The piece is 14" x 10". This was the first time I worked with metal and I haven't decided yet if I like it or not.
Tree 2 by Jo Noble
I didn't have the metal, so by the time I got it, it was Thursday and I was a bit panicked. This isn't my favorite, but I did enjoy learning how to do the metal. Thank goodness for Google Images! Photos are not the best way to see our images, but it is a way to say hello to those all over the country! And, yes, this is tree #2.
